Why should I leave a review?
Well, first of all because we asked nicely ?
More importantly though, the success of iText is the result of years of listening to the needs of both our open-source users and our commercial customers. We have used that valuable feedback to guide the development of the iText PDF library and all its related products. If you’d like to know more about iText history, you can check out our history page. Otherwise, please read on…
A brief history of iText
When Bruno Lowagie published the very first public release of iText, he was only concerned with creating a better version of his first attempt at a PDF library; rugPdf from 1998. When iText version 0.30 was released as open-source back in 2000, he could never have dreamed that it would not only become popular, but still be going from strength to strength in space year 2022.
Since iText enabled the server-side processing of PDF for the first time, iText quickly became the standard for PDF libraries. Over the next few years and through the feedback and collaboration from developers and users worldwide, it gained a wealth of new features and capabilities. The increasing development and support requirements meant that continuing as simply an open-source project was impossible and resulted in the foundation of iText as a commercial enterprise.
This was followed by the hiring of development and support staff to not only work full-time on developing and maintaining the iText PDF library, but also to offer professional, world-class support to our commercial customers. At the same time, the revenue generated from commercial licenses allowed us to continue maintaining iText’s place in the open-source software community, with regular releases continuing to this day.
The iText PDF library has gone through a number of evolutions since its first releases, with the release of iText 2 in 2007 and a switch to a dual-licensed open-source and commercial structure, iText 5 in 2009, and iText 7 in 2016. We followed that by first releasing add-on modules to iText 7 that extended the functionality of the core PDF library without adding unnecessary bloat, and then with the release of the first of our document solutions: iText DITO.
Conclusion
With over 20 years of development going into the current iText 7 PDF library and its related products, a huge part of that has been driven by the feedback from our userbase; whether they’re from the open-source community or one of our many thousands of commercial customers, we love them all and love hearing what they think of iText.
So, there you go. If that hasn’t convinced you to leave a glowing, 5-star review of iText then what will? In fact, why not simply click one of the links above and tell us what would convince you?
